Hi

Posts can get trapped by the comment spam filtering especially when editing and reposting. The email notification is from the Community system not a real person.  As the OCE's aren't back to release the post from comment spam until next week I've appended the original unedited notified version to your post.

As for whether your email has been compromised or spoofed here's the advice article:

Please do try the Reset your Password option to reset your password. Or you can change your email password in MyAccount if the email account is listed in your MyAccount.  Here's the advice article on managing your email in MyAccount. As it's not the billing email address then the MyAccount login or the billing email address will not be affected.

No Fiona, those details from TalkTalk Mail show you the information you need to set up your email client or email app like that on your Kindle but using the TalkTalk recommended IMAP account settings.

What Ady is saying is that the email admins will look at your email account logs.  If they find any device has connected to the email Inbox using POP3 protocol and has downloaded and deleted emails they'll simply confirm that the 'lost' emails were downloaded to that device.

So Ady just needs confirmation from you that you have not had any device connecting using POP3 protocol that has downloaded the 'lost' emails.  You've not yet confirmed what email setup you're using with the laptop.

Hi

The scenario of emails arriving in the Mailbox Inbox and then disappearing shortly thereafter is exactly the action of an email client or email app set up as a default POP3 email account, downloading and deleting from the server. OR emails being auto-forwarded with no copy being kept on the server. OR another Filter rule effectively moving (filing) emails out of the Inbox

So, check out all devices and webmail filtering.

Whilst troubleshooting, set up a Filter rule for all incoming emails (no conditions set) just an Action to copy emails to a personal folder created in the My folders section. What will then happen is emails will arrive in the mailbox and be put into the Inbox and the copy folder.

If that works successfully and emails still disappear from the Inbox after a time delay but stay in the copy folder I think it's certain there's some unexpected Inbox action happening. The fact there's a delay before the emails disappear does further point to a POP3 device so that's where I'd concentrate.

Thanks,  Gondola.  They need better algorithms for spotting genuine spam versus genuine emails.

Will try to follow your guidance re changing the password.

Hi,

Thank you. I'm not sure where to find this - I use Talktalk webmail on my laptop, I don't have this account linked to Outlook, and the only device it's synced to is my Kindle. I cannot see anywhere that will let me look at the settings for the account. Should I unsync the Kindle? I'm sorry if I seem a little dim, but I don't know how to solve this, and I would really like to fix it if possible.

Thank you!
Fi

Worst fears happened - I couldn't send or receive any emails even after restoring to previous settings. Good news is a system restore has put me back to where I was.

Previous setting were:

Incoming mail: pop3.nasuwt.net (I was told this by nasuwt)

Outgoing mail: smpt.talktalk.net (talktalk said I needed to use this in July 2017)

'This server requires SSL': not ticked

O/G port 25

I/C port 110

I then tried just changing the O/G port from 25 go 465 and it came up with: No socket error 10060

Error No, 0x800CCC0E, so I've put it back to 25.

I'm back to where I was now and can at least receive emails without problems and can email anyone without a btinternet.com address.

I do really appreciate your time and help on and will try anything else you suggest.

Thanks

Bitcoin and Money News spam

I have broadband with TalkTalk and my email is an old Tiscali one, taken over by TalkTalk. It's an email account I only use for very limited purposes (e.g. bank contact), so for years never had any problems with spam as it's not an email I entered anywhere not secure, and not anything with a name or word in it which would make it guessable as someone's email (I know that's not infallible, but it kept me spam-free on that account for the last 10 years!).

However, since TalkTalk changed it to the new format on webmail this year, I now get about 5 to 10 spam emails a day from Bitcoin and Money News. I keep labelling them as spam, as will everyone else, but TalkTalk doesn't seem to be doing anything to filter them out. I've never replied to them, but I seem to be getting more and more.

If I've marked hundreds of these email as spam, how come TalkTalk's email system still doesn't recognise them as spam? It shouldn't require every customer to deal with it separately when it's so obviously junk.  Other people have had the same problem looking at this forum, so it seems crazy nothing has been done to improve it.

Hi

OK, I can see why your emails to BTInternet are being blocked.  BTInternet are blocking insecure emails sent using port 25.

You say you're using the TalkTalk server for outgoing emails. Are you sending using a talktalk email address and password?  I'd expect that you are because I'd not expect the send to be authenticated using the nasuwt email address and password that you use for incoming emails to the pop3.nasuwt.net server.

So, now you've told me you're using the pop3.nasuwt.net server with your nasuwt email address and password to sign in to that server I can update the settings table.

There is a relay.nasuwt.net SMTP server hosted by claranet but, when I tested, it appears to have a certificate issue. So, assuming that the relay.clara.net SMTP server will accept your nasuwt email address and password you may like to try that first.  Use Port 587 for either no security or STARTTLS security assuming your email client offers the STARTTLS option.  If you get a certificate error pop up just accept and continue.

I've listed insecure Port / Security settings first in the table below and, if those work, upgrade to the secure Port / Security settings later.

I get these too, I use Thunderbird which has very good adaptive spam handling.

I'm afraid relay.clara.net does not accept me and I get the message:

550 No SMPT server for unauthorised users.

I've also tried just changing the O/G port but then it asks for my password and does not accept the saved one.

I've had to do another system restore so I'm giving up on this for now.

I'm in the process of trying the postmaster at btinternet. I'll let you know what they come up with.

Cheers

Hi

You really don't need to do a system restore to reinstate settings for an email client.  Just put in the old settings.

So, despite claranet hosting the nasuwt email you're not being recognised.  So what do NASUWT say about using their email address?  Do they provide an SMTP server?

I'm sure BTInternet will just say they don't accept unauthenticated emails.

Ultimately, if you cannot find an SMTP server to send your nasuwt emails then just revert to sending using your talktalk.net email address via the talktalk SMTP servers.

Not seen anything on this.  Why is changing my password such a difficult task?  Is there a telephone number for someone I can call to get this solved??

Thanks

1. I would have thought just putting the old settings in would work but it didn't. Maybe I inadvertently changed something else on both occasions.

2. NASUWT gave me the email address and their technical department helped me with my Outlook Express settings so I think they are quite happy with me using their email address.

3. I do not have a talktalk email address that I know of, just phone line and internet. If I were to use one then the people I email would not know the emails were from me,

I as well as btinternet I will contact my email provider on Monday and let you know how I get on.

I have a contact (family member in USA) with whom I have exchanged countless emails for many years.  Very recently, I sent an email to her and received no reply (and no error message about failed delivery).  Unheard of for this person to ignore me.  That same email had another USA family member on the addressee line (different domain/different part of the USA) and this second addressee did indeed receive my message, and replied promptly to its contents.  It was the second addressee who was able to confirm that the first addressee HAD received my message and HAD indeed replied to me, using "reply all".  Subsequently, second addressee was able to forward the missing reply to me.  I then tried to send a single message to first addressee only, but there is no response; as before, it is very unlikely that this addressee would ignore me.  The email domain in question is bellsouth.net  Is there any reason why TalkTalk would block an incoming email to me from that domain?

Have you checked whether it has been caught by a spam filter?

Re: Problem with Pipex POP server ?

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients was aborted after 24.9 hour(s): xxxxx@btinternet.com

Reason: The following message to xxxxxx@btinternet.com was undeliverable.

The reason for the problem: Maximum Retry Queue Age Reached

I have had the same problem:  Only emails sent to a @btinternet.com email address, and sent via POP3 are sent out, but not delivered. After 24 hours I receive this undeliverable message.  These undeliverable mails are being sent from a names.co.uk email address to an @btinternet.com email address using Thunderbird.  If I send the same emails via the names.co.uk online email system, the emails to the @btinternet.com email address are delivered to the recipient immediately.

As OCE_Ady says "it'll be BT blocking our IP"

If that is the case, it would seem that  the problem needs to be addressed by Pipex/TalkTalk  directly with BTInternet.

I do hope a solution can be found quickly

Indeed I have checked.  That was my first action when the failure became apparent to me.  I have checked on my own PC (Outlook) and within webmail on TAlkTalk's website.
